Symptoms and Manifestations of Financial Stress:
Regardless of the cause, financial stress is real and can build over time. Financial stress can ultimately destroy a person’s sense of self worth and can damage relationships. Common symptoms of financial distress include stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness or desperation. As financial problems deepen, some individuals experiencing these problems may become withdrawn, sullen, or become easily agitated. The inability to focus on important life, work, or relationship decisions and activities is another common symptom. In some cases, the feelings of hopelessness lead to reckless, erratic or even dishonest financial behavior, increasing the severity and duration of the problem.
Treatment Strategies for Someone Burdened with Financial Stress:
As with any problem, treatment of financial stress should be focused primarily on resolving the root cause of the problem. If the problem arises from short-term unemployment an individual will benefit from career counseling, resume reviews, interview coaching, and networking tips. If the financial problems are a consequence of poor financial management then a strict budget needs to be developed and adhered to. Severe cases of fiscal mismanagement may require the cooperation of creditors to reduce debt load or re-negotiate terms of payment. Chronic unemployment may require additional training or education in order to redeploy an individual into a career field that is in higher demand.
