Communication is defined in dictionaries as a process of transferring information from one entity to another. Moreover, communication is defined as “the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs.” It is categorized into two groups – verbal and non-verbal communication and it is known to have a two-way process. There is an exchange and progression of thoughts, feelings, or ideas. It is important to note that in communication, you are being understood and you also know how to interpret or understand. In the field of business, business communication skills are an incredible asset. Incredible in the sense that it may make or break a certain business. Business communication today or even in the yesteryears really matters a lot.
Communication, being a two-way process must always be considered. There should be an exchange of thoughts or ideas, or even feelings even in business. It does not mean that because you are the boss that you will always be the speaker. One factor which the persons, especially in business, must know is the word listening. Communication must happen between or among the following:
• owner and employees
• employees and clients
• owner, employees, and clients
Employees' communication lines must be open with the owner, superiors (managers, HRMO, etc), and would-be customers. Employees must know two kinds of employee communication – work communication and team communication. Work communication is necessary in carrying out the the company's goals and objectives. Team communication allows the workers to move forward or to go in one specific direction.
Being part of a group, the team must have cooperation. Basic knowledge tells us that without cooperation a certain business will retrogress. Business communication skills then are really very important. For example, in a certain store that sells products at a low price people line up to buy goods. The sales ladies are probably not trained well on how to communicate with customers since they look tired, groggy and sad. Those who have lined up start to vanish. They transfer to another store.
In the situation presented above, the sales ladies have not acquired proper business communication skills. They are the reason why customers walked out and went to other stores. In this modern era, face-to-face interaction is not really required. You can promote products while your pajamas are still on. You can do this with the aid of internet softwares. Companies resort to sending e-mails to possible customers. This is somewhat effective but not that much. There are those who ignore their e-mails.
