Tension headache is one of the most common types of primary headache. What feels like a band gradually tightening around your head is actually a sign of an impending tension headache. Uncomfortable at the very least, tension headaches can also become so painful as to be debilitating. Here are some home remedies you can try in treating tension headaches:

Learn to take things easy.
Stress is a contributing factor that strongly induces tension headaches. Relieve stress by learning to take things easy. Delegate tasks around the house and get the help of your family members regarding these. At work, instead of volunteering for each and every task, learn to trust your team members and delegate work assignments.

Use heat therapy on tensed muscles.
During episodes of tension headaches, tension is usually evident on the shoulder and neck muscles. These usually get taut and tight when you get stressed or tensed. Ease the tension by applying heat therapy on the tensed muscles to prevent the onset of the headaches.

Take lots of rest.
Lack of rest or sleep can result in stress and stress can induce tension headaches. Ensuring that your body gets sufficient rest can also prevent the onset of headaches. As such, it might be a good idea to invest in good quality bed linens, pillows, and blankets to make your sleep a pleasurable experience.

Limit sugar and caffeine intake.
Too much sugar can trigger tension headaches. Limiting your intake of sugar can reduce your chances of having a tension headache episode. It is also a good idea to reduce your caffeine intake since many leading medications against tension headaches contain caffeine.

Keep to the dark.
Staying in a dark room can make the headache go away faster since light has the tendency to irritate and strain your eyes. Lie down in a darkened and comfortable room until the headache comes to pass.
