With all the biggest events in life that we face, the key is always preparation.  Nothing could be truer when it comes to pregnancy and preparing yourself for labor and childbirth.  Giving birth to a child is considered one of the most difficult, life-affirming, and natural things that a human being can do.  Preparing yourself in the proper way for labor and the challenges of being a parent will put you in the ideal place to face the challenges of labor and delivery with resolve and understanding.

The point that a mother must be most prepared for is the moment the child begins to push against the walls of the uterus, signaling their desire to come out into the world.  This is when it all begins.  What follows this initial movement is a whole lot of pain, mental elation, fear, and anticipation.  Often, there’s also an incredible amount of waiting.

The more mentally prepared you are to handle the pain and the fear, the more you’ll be able to tap into the elation that every mother so desperately anticipates.  When you fully understand the birthing process, and you’ve practiced techniques to handle the pain, you’ll be much better equipped to endure the challenges and forge ahead to the joy.

It’s a wonderful idea to attend a Lamaze class or other school for expecting mothers.  This is a wonderful place to meet other pregnant women, and get yourself informed about the labor process with a group of peers.

Prenatal classes will teach you exercises that lessen the pain and discomfort through breathing, relaxation techniques, and positive thinking.  When you rehearse the labor process with these calming skills in mind, you’re actually able to alter your labor process and create a more relaxed and focused environment.

When searching for the right class or consultant, ask around with your friends what classes or teachers have helped them in the past.  You can also ask the hospital that you’ve chosen for any suggestions about birthing classes and Lamaze classes.

Prenatal Yoga is a wonderful way to relieve stress and tension, and learning breathing and stretching techniques that have a wonderful effect on the birthing process.

All that’s left after you’ve practiced, learned, and prepared, is the actual labor itself!  No doubt, if it’s your first time having a child, the labor process is going to be different than you imagined it to be.  Simply try to use all the techniques you practiced and trust your instincts about what you need each moment to make the process easier for you.
