In recent years there has been an increasing awareness of an aggressive form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos and asbestos products.  Prolonged asbestos exposure can lead to Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs.  There has been an awareness of the dangers of asbestos in our society for quite some time. However, there is still a significant installed base of asbestos products in the United States.  Many of these products are in building materials and are a continuous potential source of risk.

Asbestos fibers are typically inhaled, where they enter the respiratory system.  Once inhaled, these fibers attach themselves to the lining of the lungs where they can remain and cause scarring and swelling.  Over time, the lesions and scars resulting from the asbestos fibers can turn malignant.  This is a condition called pleural Mesothelioma.  Unfortunately, pleural Mesothelioma can be lethal, and currently has no known cure.  As with other forms of cancer, aggressive treatment can prolong life, however, the prognosis is often poor for this type of cancer.  In addition to the risk of pleural Mesothelioma, occasionally the asbestos fibers will work their way into the abdominal area.  In this case there is a risk of a different but equally dangerous cancer called peritoneal Mesothelioma.  Peritoneal Mesothelioma is another form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibers.

Once the fibers are inhaled, it can literally take years for the first symptoms to manifest themselves.  One cannot assume that just because no symptoms exist yet, that an asbestos exposure is to be disregarded.  Any exposure to asbestos should be taken seriously.

Once the disease becomes active there are certain symptoms that accompany Mesothelioma.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma Asbestos Related Lung Cancer

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chronic or persistent cough
  • Chest pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Weight loss

Obviously, the symptoms of Mesothelioma could also indicate any number of lesser or completely unrelated health problems. If you know that you have been exposed to asbestos and you suspect that you are experiencing possible symptoms you should consult with a physician as soon as possible. Mesothelioma is something that needs to be caught early and treated aggressively.

Even if you are not experiencing Mesothelioma symptoms you should consult a qualified Mesothelioma physician if you know that you have been exposed to asbestos in the past.

Mesothelioma Attorney

In addition to consulting with a physician you should consult with a Mesothelioma attorney to evaluate legal remedies in the event that you are diagnosed with Mesothelioma lung cancer. With all the attention that has been focused on Mesothelioma in recent years, there are a number of legal options for those who are afflicted with Mesothelioma. A good Mesothelioma attorney will be a critical factor in the success of your legal actions. Treatments can be extremely expensive.  Even if you do not yet have symptoms and you have not been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, it would not hurt to have a preliminary consultation with a Mesothelioma attorney.

Asbestos Products and Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos has been used over the years in literally thousands of different commonly used household products.  One of the most common products to use asbestos is home insulation.  As a consequence, a great many contractors and homeowners have been exposed to asbestos fibers over the years.  Because the asbestos fibers can lie dormant in the lungs for many years the dangers and risks of Mesothelioma were slow to be observed.  As the evidence of the strong correlation between asbestos and Mesothelioma came to light, producers of products containing asbestos began to pull these products from the market. However, a great deal of damage had already been done.  Additionally, there were many millions of older homes and commercial buildings still containing these contaminated products, which continue to pose s significant risk of Mesothelioma to this day.  While much of this asbestos product has been removed over the years, the incidence of Mesothelioma continues to increase as symptoms begin to manifest themselves from exposures which occurred years earlier.  If you believe you have been exposed to asbestos, even for a short period of time you may want to consult with a physician and a Mesothelioma attorney for advice.
